After losing his childhood friend in a traumatic experience, he dedicated his life to create a device that keeps all girls and women safe.
Since 4, Brandon and Amanda grew up together as childhood friends. Their close-knit friendship was built over the years from learning and playing together.
They formed a bond as strong as blood.
One Saturday, they were supposed to meet at their usual hang out spot - a tree house they built together in the nearby park. Unfortunately, after a long wait, she was still nowhere to be found.
“I was a little bumped but thought she might be unwell and will check in tomorrow.”
He headed to their tree house again hoping she will be there when he stumbled across a disturbing figure.
“It was reeking so badly so I was about to retreat from the scene. That was when I noticed the scarf I gifted last Christmas.”
“That was the first time I've ever seen a dead body...and it was my best friend. It suddenly became harder to breathe. I couldn’t move. I stood there in silence for a long time.”
His lips trembled as tears of pain raced down his cheeks. The smell and sight of it made him convulsed at first. Then his expression collapsed into fear and heartbreak. Her parents had lodged a police report on their missing daughter. She was raped and murdered.
Little did he know, Amanda was one of many unfortunate victims. Cases have been piling up around his town, all of which revolves around a similar modus operandi.
Worst of all, the unsub was never apprehended. She remains but a memory.
“I couldn’t even say my goodbyes. The last words we exchanged were ‘See you next week…’”
He hated that he couldn’t be there for her and for not being able to help when she needed most.
As years passed, Brandon grew up with a dream where women can walk the streets safely. In memory of his best friend Amanda, he was determined to make his city a better place.
With an unbreakable desire he graduated with a master’s degree in criminal psychology. Brandon got directly involved with a United States law enforcement agency. As part of his course, he studied closely with a cluster of criminals.
During his research conduct, he finally connected the dots.
Brandon discovered that the average human gets startled easily with a sudden exposure to loud, ear-splitting sounds above 95 decibels - equivalent to that of a speeding race car.
It is enough to induce panic to predators for approximately 5 seconds, which results in a life-saving scenario.
Dr. Hank, a professor in human behaviour works very closely with Brandon, explains the relationship between humans and loud noises.
“Despite how us humans have evolved over centuries, there are some things that remain for the better good.”
It is the evolutionary fight or flight response in humans that acts as a defense mechanism. Which in hand brings our body to an instant still when provoked or frightened, and a loud noise can do that perfectly.
This became key to realizing his dream.
For years, Brandon shed sweat and tears to transform theory to reality and the first 20 prototypes were fabricated.
A handheld alarm that blasts a continuous sharp ring of 120 decibels. Equivalent to that of an ambulance siren, it travels a range of over 500 ft away. Primarily used to deter predators and ultimately buy time, the egg-shape device promotes better handling. Being lightweight, it is trouble-free to carry around.
The prototypes were first issued to night shift female nurses and within a week, one reported of an attempted assault on her way home.
“At first I panicked! Then I was reminded of the device and pulled the pin. Then I ran away and to my relief, the robber fled the scene too! What surprised me was a resident happened to be walking his dog so he came for my aid upon hearing the alarm. He managed to pin down the criminal just before the police arrived.”
“This isn’t just a solution. This is hope.”– night shift nurse
A standing ovation from his team and the local police department lasted for minutes.
Then the most amazing thing happened. The officers identified the criminal in custody as the suspect who assaulted Amanda.
“I have never felt so relieved and contented! Justice is finally served.”
The day after, production of the portable alarm was set in motion and gave it its name, BEACON™. In the first 4 days, 2700 units were sold across the country. It was a growing success.
Later, Brandon got a text from his colleague.
“Did you watch the news? Everyone is talking about BEACON™! The average petty crime rates in our city is at a decline at an amazing drop of about 37% from the past month! Reports even stated that BEACON™ is involved in keeping the people safe.”
BEACON™ had been creating quite a commotion ever since.
“It’s so easy to use and it’s never hassle to carry around with me!” – Kayla M
Brandon witnessed the impact it brings to his community and have decided to incorporate a discount for every purchase to completely distribute the remaining of his supplies.
